IKEA SAMLA 22-litre box in Australia: volume is not a shelf-fit measurement

Give the shelf and the contents separate records

IKEA’s Australian SAMLA box 901.809.40 is listed at 39 cm wide, 28 cm deep and 28 cm high, with a volume of 22 litres. These fields do different jobs. Litres describe nominal capacity; the dimensions help begin a physical-space enquiry. Neither field, by itself, proves that a particular collection of objects will fit or remain accessible on your shelf.

This documentary buying guide was checked on 3 October 2026. We have not handled the box, measured its interior or tested a storage arrangement. Its aim is to prevent capacity from replacing the shape and access questions that matter to a real purchase.

Measure the available space as a usable opening

For a shelf already owned, record the usable width, depth and height. Also note the opening through which the box would pass and how it would be retrieved. A recess can appear large enough on paper while an edge, door or another stored object affects access. Keep such observations separate from the box’s published dimensions.

Use a clearly labelled planning outline to compare the available space with the specified product. This is a preliminary screening method, not a safety or fit approval. Do not assume a zero-clearance match establishes that a container can be inserted and removed comfortably.

Inventory the awkward objects first

Write down the longest, widest and tallest objects in the intended collection. A bulky shape can drive the decision even when the total apparent quantity is modest. Avoid converting a collection into litres by guesswork; the objects still need to pass through an opening and occupy a usable arrangement.

The cited measurement section does not give the internal dimensions used for this guide. If the plan depends on an exact rigid object fitting inside, request the relevant usable interior measurements or an authorised demonstration. The outer specification should not be relabelled as interior clearance.

Compare storage arrangements by retrieval needs

Describe how often each group of contents needs to be accessed. A box that suits long-term grouping may be less convenient for objects retrieved individually throughout a day. That is a preference-led comparison about your routine, not a measured criticism of this product.

If several containers are being considered, keep a separate shelf record for each intended position and identify the exact article number. Similar names and different heights can otherwise be collapsed into a generic SAMLA row. Compare the actual proposed basket and any separately identified accessories rather than assuming a product photograph lists everything supplied.

Keep capacity evidence within its limits

The stated dimensions and litres do not establish weather protection, archival suitability, food contact, stacking safety or load capacity in a particular arrangement. We provide no stacking or installation instructions. Those questions require their own current model instructions and evidence.

Before buying, resolve the shelf opening, interior clearance and contents that remain uncertain. Write Needs editor verification where information is missing. Current Australian availability, cost and inclusions require a fresh offer check. Save the source date with article number 901.809.40 so another size is not silently substituted later.
